1. Migration Trauma24:

People experience psychological distress from witnessing disappearances, death, and abuse of their people during the process of migration.

Healing Response/Practices:

  • Seek mental health services to address trauma and join support groups with others with similar backgrounds

2. Ethno-racial Trauma25:

Experiencing, and/or fear of experiencing discrimination, violence, and intimidation directed at ethno-racial minority groups stemming from oppressive laws, policies, and practices.

Healing Response/Practices:

  • Find a local community offering mental health services and/or a safe space, and seek out providers for trauma informed care

Reflection Question: What are some ways that your community could help you feel safer?

3. Intergenerational Trauma26:

The emotional and psychological trauma that is transmitted across generations, especially to individuals who have migrated from Latinx countries to the United States or Canada due to legacies of migration-related stresses, political violence, and colonialism.

Healing Response/Practices:

  • Find local community organization(s) offering mental health services
  • Focus on providing intergenerational care to parents and children to avoid passing on traumatic beliefs - Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Family Play Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, etc.
